Avoiding Misguidance

Matthew 7:16
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

I asked my son, whom is 17 years old, what would be a pressing topic amongst the youth today!  The word he gave me was misguidance.  To be misguided means to lead somebody in a wrong direction or into making a mistake.  The best way to avoid being misguided is by knowing the fruits of the spirit as well as what is not the fruits of the spirit.  Does a person possess good fruit or thorns?  If you know how to differentiate between the two, you would then be able to avoid being misguided in every walk of your life.

In Galatians 5:19-21 says “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like.”These works of the flesh are the exact opposite of the fruits of the Holy Spirit; this is the sort of personalities (spirits) you should never allow to guide you in anything, for they will lead you astray.  Whenever you see someone operating in this sort of behavior you should flee from around this sort of person.  You should also examine your our own selves to be sure that you too are not operating in this sort of behavior (spirit).  2 Corinthians 13:5 says “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”  So while we are careful to not be misguided by others, we should also be careful to not be misguided by our very own flesh (ourselves).

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”  (Galatians 5:22-23).  Now to recognize the fruits of the Holy Spirit is to recognize a person that is Christ like.  A person that is Christ like will not lead you astray; they will try to guide you in the ways of righteousness.  Knowing what to look for in a person’s characters is the best way to avoid being misguided in today’s society; and more so to pray for the Holy Spirit to dwell within you, so that you will be equipped to handle whatever comes your way.  Our best teacher is the Holy Spirit, and we should remember that the Holy Spirit will never lead you astray.

My prayer today, Father I come before you in the name above all names, the name of Christ Jesus, asking you to lead and guide us in the ways of righteousness.  Teach us to discern what is good as well what means to bring us harm.  I pray that the fruits of the Holy Spirit will dwell within each of us, both young and old, that we shall be known by good fruits and know whether men gather grapes or thorns, or figs or thistle; amen!
